About the School

Whitfield School is an independent, coeducational college preparatory day school for grades 6–12, located on a 26–acre campus in suburban St. Louis.

Whitfield School was founded in 1952 by John Barnes and Allen Cole. During the mid-1980s, the school experienced a period of growth, both in physical space and student population. Whitfield became a nationally-recognized leader in the progressive education movement. It was during this time that many of the important tenets that impact the school’s culture today were formed, including depth over breadth, demonstrations of mastery, and teacher as coach. Over the last 10 years the school has, with great intentionality, updated its mission statement and has continued to focus on character, scholarship and global citizenship. At the core of the mission is the school’s commitment to character education, as embodied in the Habits of Heart and Mind curriculum.

Whitfield School cultivates ethical, confident, successful students in a community of innovation, collaboration, and trust.
