About the School

Founded in 1926, The Rumson Country Day School (RCDS), an independent, co-educational, non-sectarian, N-8 school, sits on an 11 acre campus in the heart of Rumson. Built on the site of St. George’s-on-the-Hill Church, the charming original structure is still incorporated into the modern main buildings of the school, much as tradition and innovation define the school’s curriculum and life today. The RCDS community mirrors the small, friendly, beach town of Rumson, which is only 45 minutes by high-speed ferry to NYC. The next Head will be only the 9th leader in the school’s 94-year history.

Although the academic program has been updated and refined through the years, the school’s early philosophy of a traditional, academically-rigorous liberal arts program continues today. The school teaches English literature and language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, languages (French, Latin, and Spanish), visual arts, music, physical education, and interscholastic sports. Student activities are selected to foster intellectual, cultural, and social growth as well as physical health and wellness. They provide opportunities for student leadership and social interaction and encourage development of student interests. Students in grades N-5 are divided among heterogeneous homerooms. In grades 6-8, classes are departmentalized and honors sections are offered in English literature and language arts, mathematics, and world language. Students matriculate to leading boarding schools and area public, private, and charter schools.

In 2007 RCDS added a “school within a school,” The Carmody School, serving students with language-based learning differences in order for families to stay together at RCDS; approximately 10% of the student population is enrolled in this program. For 23 years RCDS has offered a Horizons program, a six-week summer academic, cultural and recreational enrichment program for underserved students from a diverse, low-income population. About 250 students attend this program annually.
