About the School

Founded in 1980, The Craig Lower School is located in Mountain Lakes, a borough of Morris County, New Jersey, approximately fifty minutes from New York City. The Craig High School is in nearby Boonton, NJ. Craig specializes in offering a challenging academic program to approximately 122 students in Grades 2-12 who have diagnosed learning disabilities or difficulties learning in a traditional classroom. With a dedicated staff, highly favorable teacher/student ratio, and strong commitment to community values, Craig provides students with the skills to succeed academically and socially.

The Craig School’s Mission is to provide students a strategy-based, comprehensive, and challenging school experience that acknowledges their learning disabilities, builds on their aptitudes, and strengthens their self-awareness and self-esteem. Craig helps parents assess their child’s true potential and understand the nature of learning disabilities, and it provides families an internal support network within the Craig community. The school aspires to become a second home for its students.

Students at Craig are typically those of average or above average ability, but who have not progressed at a level consistent with their abilities. With these boys and girls Craig aspires to two primary goals: 1.) Enabling students to learn what is worthy of knowing (content knowledge) by teaching the skills and strategies required to engage in meaningful learning, and 2.) Cultivating and nurturing in each student what it is to be a good person.

The academic program at The Craig School is aligned with New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards, yet the school’s instructional methods extend far beyond the state guidelines. Craig draws upon a wealth of strategies that educators have been developing and refining since Samuel Orton and Anna Gillingham began collaborating in the 1920’s to use a multi-sensory approach to address the needs of dyslexic children. Craig also integrates organizational skills derived from a variety of sources including the Landmark and Benchmark Schools. With a student/faculty ratio of 4:1, Craig students receive the high degree of individual attention that is essential for enabling children with learning disabilities to make positive academic progress while feeling personally supported.

Craig High School, started in 2000, is located in a separate wing of Boonton High School in Boonton, NJ. Craig High is a college-prep high school that specializes in working with students with various academic learning disabilities. The two locations of The Craig School are less than three miles apart thus providing the opportunity to operate with a one-school mindset.
