About the School

Founded in 1968, St. Joseph Montessori School is a Catholic Montessori community committed to a learning environment that respects the uniqueness of each child in reaching his/her full potential. Its Montessori curriculum integrates a philosophy that promotes higher order thinking and abstract reasoning skills for students 3 years old through the 8th Grade. SJMS takes prides in being more than a place of learning; it is a safe community where students confidently develop their character. They incorporate sound values and relate peacefully while developing a responsibility for themselves and the natural world.

The program at SJMS is designed to achieve the following goals:

  • to foster a positive attitude toward learning
  • to encourage self-confidence and independence
  • to encourage an abiding curiosity
  • to instill respect for the dignity of all humankind

Located in the historic and vibrant Italian Village/Short North section of Columbus, St. Joseph Montessori School serves a diverse population from Columbus and surrounding communities. A faculty of twenty-five men and women, all of whom are Montessori certified or working towards certification, teach the students in multi-age classrooms, typically with two teachers in each room.

About the Position

The Head of School reports to a thirteen-member Board of Trustees, comprised of current and former SJMS parents and dedicated community leaders. The Board is responsible for overseeing the school’s financial health and for its purpose, direction, and progress. For its next Head of School, the Board seeks an individual who can provide strong leadership for the school’s curricular and co-curricular programs and is comfortable being the public face of SJMS. Strong preference will be given to candidates who are Montessori trained and/or certified, Catholic, and ardent advocates for the advantages of a Montessori education.
