About the School

Seattle School for Boys* (SSB) opened its doors with 11 students in the Fall of 2019 for boys in grades 6-8. With a strong academic and social-emotional program and a highly satisfied student and family community, enrollment grew to 14 after just a few months. As with other schools, though, the year ended with online learning and other pandemic-driven challenges. During SSB’s startup years, the School has provided a steady program of growth and development even while battling COVID-related enrollment and financial challenges. Today, as the pandemic subsides, SSB forecasts a healthy financial picture and consistently increasing enrollment.

The School “encourages and inspires boys to become collaborative learners, creative thinkers and compassionate leaders who genuinely care about our diverse global community.” The program has been designed and developed to address very specifically the academic and developmental needs of middle school boys. Active and personalized learning is made possible through flexible interdisciplinary curricula and the Bridges Program, which takes boys out of the building weekly for experiential learning opportunities. Every aspect of the program is designed to help young males develop a sense of agency over their own lives, resiliency in the face of challenge, and compassion and empathy for those around them.

Through the vision of its co-founders, the creativity and dedication of a talented staff, and the hard work of a small board of trustees, SSB has become a school with great promise. Parents are pleased, students are happy and productive, and Seattle is beginning to recognize this gem of a school so recently added to the area’s educational options. Though many challenges remain as this nascent school continues to grow, the opportunities for the next Head of School are plentiful as the world emerges from the era of COVID.

*SSB uses the word “boys” to include any child who identifies as or has been socialized as a boy.
