About the School
The Out-of-Door Academy (ODA) is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory day school serving 745 students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade on two campuses totaling 95 acres in Sarasota, Florida. Out-of-Door was founded on Siesta Key in 1924 to serve students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. In 1996, a second campus in the Lakewood Ranch area of Sarasota was acquired to accommodate the addition of an upper school. Over the past ten years, the school has experienced steady and impressive enrollment growth from 550 to 745 students. The Out-of-Door Academy is a member of the Cum Laude Society.
At Out-of-Door, superior academics are defined by unique programs that cultivate the development of the whole child. The School has continuously implemented new strategies to meet the emerging educational needs of the next generation while staying true to the mission of its founders. Continued curricular enhancements and investments in state-of-the-art facilities and technology foster hands-on, student-centered learning. Out-of-Door’s core values: Respect, Integrity, Service, Excellence, and Responsibility are the foundation of the school community.
ODA’s teaching philosophy is defined by the pursuit of excellence and a commitment to build character through a balanced program of academics, the arts and athletics. With a favorable 9:1 student-teacher ratio, small classes allow for personalized attention from dedicated faculty, 68% of whom hold advanced degrees. Each year, 100% of ODA graduates are accepted to four-year colleges and universities across the country.
Both campuses have evolved to meet the needs of a growing enrollment as well as to enhance and enrich the experience of every student at ODA. Today, the five-acre, picturesque Siesta Key campus is home to the Lower School (PK-5). The historic campus features recently renovated classroom buildings, art studios, music rooms, technology labs, science labs, an outdoor amphitheater, outdoor and covered play areas, and state-of-the-art, age-appropriate playground equipment. The 90-acre Uihlein Campus in Lakewood Ranch houses both the Middle and Upper Schools (Grades 6-12). Facilities include interactive technology in every classroom, a fine and performing arts center with a 590-seat black box theater, a student and STEM Center, a competition gymnasium, a field house, a lighted stadium, tennis courts, and practice fields. A state-of-the-art 13,500 square foot Middle School building opened in August 2020.
The Out-of-Door Academy offers 42 sports teams in grades 6-12 and holds over 30 arts performances every year. With more than 50 student-run clubs and activities including cultural, arts and media organizations, ODA offers students robust opportunities to build relationships and gain leadership experience.
