About the School
The Headship of Near North Montessori is an exciting opportunity to lead a vibrant educational community deeply rooted in the Montessori philosophy and located in the heart of Chicago. Near North is one of the country’s largest and oldest Montessori schools. Founded in 1963, NNM provides a welcoming, enriching environment that promotes confidence, independence and curiosity in each and every student. It is expected that the next head of school will have a deep appreciation for the Montessori philosophy, although current experience in a Montessori school is not required.
The school describes its program as such:
“Here you will not find the traditional lineup of desks in rows, textbooks and rote memorization. What you will find are dynamic learning laboratories – a school alive with students exploring questions about the world around them. Classrooms are vibrant communities, each organized by age levels, where students spend three years learning and growing together. Little ones watch older students as they master new skills. Older ones take the time to mentor younger students as they work through new challenges.”
The Near North faculty is highly regarded, and school leadership is strong and stable. Enrollment has remained consistently high as the school has dealt effectively with the challenges of the Covid pandemic. The board of directors has 15 members (including the HOS as ex officio) and has been instrumental in writing a thoughtful and ambitious strategic plan for the school’s future. Parent involvement is meaningful and productive, with a “satisfaction rate” close to ninety per cent. DEI work is deeply rooted in the school and remains a high priority for the future.
It is said that Chicagoans are among some of the most educated people in the country, and the city is home to a variety of well-known independent schools and world-class universities. Near North Montessori draws students from many neighborhoods and creatively uses the cultural and historical resources of the city.
Near North Montessori School is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate in any of its personnel policies or procedures against any employee or applicant for employment on the basis of age, race, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, disability or religious belief.
