About the School

The Jackson Walnut Park Schools Educational Collaborative (JWP), a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston, seeks a dynamic, experienced and collaborative leader to serve as Head of School for the Jackson School beginning July 1, 2020. Located in Newton, Massachusetts, the Collaborative consists of Walnut Park Montessori School (ages 18 months – 6 years) and Jackson School, a Catholic elementary school (grades K-6).

The position reports to the Board of Trustees.

Job Description for the Head of the Jackson School

Instructional Leadership

  • Work with faculty to develop a rigorous academic program that meets the learning needs of all students
  • Maintain academic standards:
    • Monitor curriculum, testing, grading, and program evaluations; oversee implementation of changes; assess overall effectiveness
    • Ensure school mission and values are reflected in the curriculum across grades
    • Maintain organized and accurate student records and ensure confidentiality
    • Oversee standardized reporting system for student performance
    • Maintain master schedule of the school/classrooms
    • Collaborate with the Walnut Park Head of School in developing cross school programs and schedules
    • Plan and ensure adequate recreation/movement/outdoor time for all students in age-appropriate spaces
    • Create and supervise procedures for identifying and addressing students’ special needs (academic, health, etc.)
  • Maintain and develop a highly qualified faculty and staff
    • Recruit, hire, retain, and assess performance of faculty and staff
    • Provide feedback to teachers and observe classrooms to assess performance
    • Mentor and develop faculty
    • Maintain personnel records
  • Provide Professional Development for faculty that advances the curriculum as well as the instructional and assessment practices supporting student learning

Communications and Community Outreach

  • Serve as a visible leader and day-to-day point of contact within the school community – faculty, parents, students, and prospective families:
    • Communicate regularly with parents
    • Conduct school meetings
    • Respond to parent inquiries and concerns in a timely fashion
    • Attend and represent the school at school/campus wide events: fundraisers, school activities, mission activities, and admissions events
    • Support campus-wide functions and coordination:
    • Select committee participants, department chairs/committee members

Finance and Facilities Management

  • Prepare the Jackson School budget in concert with the Board of Trustees and oversee the implementation of the budget once approved
  • Oversee the maintenance of the Jackson School plant
    • Take steps to ensure safety
    • Ensure building cleanliness and establish a regular schedule for building maintenance

School Culture

  • Work with faculty, staff and parents to foster a love of learning among students
  • Establish an atmosphere of respect for self and others
  • Serve as a role model and upholder of student expectations:
    • Enforce student disciplinary procedures
    • Monitor school climate and culture
    • Communicate and enforce school rules in collaboration with faculty/staff

Oversight and Management of Shared Administrative Support Services

  • Provide oversight, management, and evaluation for administrative functions including:
    • Admissions
    • Advancement
    • Communications
    • Business Management

Note:  The offices of admissions, advancement, communication, and business management serve both the Jackson School and the Walnut Park School.  These schools share a campus and a mission as well as administrative support services.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have values consistent with the core values of Jackson Walnut Park; strong management, administrative, and oral and written communication skills; three-five years of prior teaching experience; a minimum of five years of experience as a head of school, principal or comparable administrative experience; and a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration, Curriculum and Instruction or similar field.
