About the School

Dwight-Englewood School (D-E) is a coeducational, independent college preparatory day school of 1015 students, serving Preschool (age 3) through Grade 12. D-E is the product of three merged schools, the oldest of which was founded in 1889. The School is one of the most ethnically diverse in Bergen County, and students represent over 115 different zip codes in New Jersey and New York. Over $5 million of the Dwight-Englewood budget is devoted to financial aid. The excellence of a Dwight-Englewood education rests firmly upon the foundation of the faculty. The faculty are experienced, passionate, and as dedicated to ongoing learning as the students. Dwight-Englewood is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools and is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools. The D-E Upper School is the largest division in the School, home to approximately 520 students in grades 9 through 12 and more than 60 faculty and staff members. Led, as are all the divisions, by the Foundation Documents of the school—its Mission, Diversity Values Statement, and Profiles of a Graduate and a Teacher—the Upper School is a vibrant community of students and faculty fully engaged in the joy of intellectual discovery and learning.

About the Position

The Upper School Principal reports to the Head of School and is a member of the senior administrative team. They are responsible for all aspects of the Upper School of 520 students and over 60 faculty and staff members. The Principal oversees the academic department chairs (jointly with the Middle School Principal), the Director of Athletics, the Dean of College Counseling, the Directors of Social Emotional Learning and Student Activities, the Upper School Student Support Team, and four class deans.

The next Upper School Principal will have the opportunity to build upon the work of the past years, during which the School has developed, refined, and implemented the tenets of the Foundation Documents to create a school that actively and visibly lives its mission.

The successful candidate will be an experienced Upper School leader and a skilled teacher who cares deeply about both children and faculty. They will be serious and knowledgeable about the practice of teaching and enjoy engaging in discussions about teaching and learning. An organized collaborator and an active listener who is comfortable with discussion and disagreement, they will be able to balance deliberation with decisiveness and effectively hold people accountable. They will understand the challenges and opportunities of working in a fast-paced, high-expectations school environment with a demanding clientele, and will be skilled at diplomatically and articulately being the educator in the room when necessary.
