About the School

The Headship of Davidson Day School is an exciting opportunity to lead a vibrant school community built on the principles of collaboration, creativity and character development. In less than two decades DDS has emerged as a leading independent school in the attractive Lake Norman region north of Charlotte, and the home of Davidson College.

Over the past six years the school has made significant strides in enriching its offerings and expanding the campus. The dedicated and accomplished faculty, which was led by Dr. Latta Baucom, is highly regarded by both students and parents. Tragically, Dr. Baucom died in July of 2019, and the Board seeks a successor to further the vision for DDS.

The academic, arts, athletics and extra-curricular programs are extensive and enjoy high rates of success and participation. Each division is highly regarded for its academic program and individual attention. In the Upper School honors and AP courses are offered in every major discipline. A unique travel-study program has students and their teachers doing archaeological field work in Belize, Greece, Spain and Portugal. The advisory program is strong and includes two college counselors. The administrative team consists of three division heads and the directors of admissions, development, facilities, athletics and finance.

As an independent school, Davidson Day is governed by a Board of Trustees whose eighteen members serve the school on a voluntary basis.

The Board of Trustees is responsible for the following: Assuring the relevance and fulfillment of the School’s mission. Hiring, supporting and evaluating the Head of School, who is in charge of day-to-day administration and operations. Securing the long-term financial viability of the School. The current strategic plan calls for significant expansion of the Upper School on land recently acquired by the school.
