The School

Founded in 1911, Columbus Academy is a PreK-12 coeducational college preparatory day school of 1,075 students located on a 231-acre campus ten miles from downtown Columbus, Ohio. Student programs are organized into three divisions: Lower School (PreK-Grade 5), Middle School (Grades 6-8), and Upper School (Grades 9-12). The school offers a rigorous academic program as part of its mission to educate the whole child – mind, body, and character. Columbus Academy faculty and staff members are expected to be continuous learners in their fields, to engage in caring and cooperative partnerships with colleagues and parents, to have a demonstrated commitment to the values of equity and inclusion, and to help each student reach his or her full potential.

The Position

Columbus Academy seeks a full-time Director of Diversity with responsibilities to begin July 1, 2022. The Director reports to the Head of School and is a part of the Leadership Team.

Qualifications: Preferred candidates will possess the following qualifications:

  • 3+ years experience as a diversity or multicultural practitioner
  • Strong familiarity with independent schools
  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree; advanced degree preferred
  • Ability to teach academic courses and/or lead extracurricular activities
  • Strong skills as writer, listener, and public speaker
  • A genuine affection for school-aged children

Position Expectations: The individual selected to this position will be expected to carry out the following responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership in the area of diversity and community life at the school
  • Direct the activities of parent, student, and faculty/staff groups whose purposes and goals are related to diversity issues
  • Provide leadership on diversity issues for faculty and staff in their work with students
  • Guide faculty/staff professional development about multiculturalism in curricular and co-curricular programs
  • Serve as a liaison between Columbus Academy and various underrepresented groups in Greater Columbus
  • Assist the school’s admissions efforts and its faculty/staff recruitment programs
  • Attend to the concerns and needs of underrepresented groups and advocate on their behalf where appropriate
  • Serve as a resource for faculty with respect to curriculum design and  student  support.
  • Support and develop student diversity leadership
  • Network with diversity coordinators at other independent schools as well as off-campus cultural resource organizations
  • Represent the school at local, regional, and national multicultural events as determined in conjunction with the head of school
  • Pursue professional development opportunities; attend conferences  and professional meetings in order to remain current with diversity and inclusion issues that may affect the school

Physical Conditions: Candidates must be able to manage the following conditions:

  • Ability to be physically mobile around a large campus
  • Ability to work in a no smoking environment
