City and Country School is an independent, progressive school for children ages 2-13 in Greenwich Village founded in 1914. Children at City and Country develop responsibility and a strong sense of community through group experiences such as block building and work with other open-ended materials in the Lower School, and group jobs in the Middle and Upper School.
The Middle School Division Director is responsible for oversight of the school experience of each child and teacher (Group and Special) in their division. Building strong relationships across the community is essential. As part of a larger administrative team, the Middle School Division Director is responsible for both daily and long-term needs of the division while upholding City and Country’s values. The Middle School Division Director helps to build a cohesive community for the teachers (20 direct reports) and students (90) in the Division.
The Middle School Division Director participates in the daily life of Groups in a variety of ways. Opportunities might include facilitating a Book Group, helping to sew costumes for a Play, assisting a student with research, or attending a Trip. As a consistent presence in the lives of students, the Middle School Division Director helps motivate students to reach their goals, the goals of their Group and those of the School. The Middle School Division Director holds the line on behavioral issues that warrant attention beyond the teacher. In all of these contexts, the Middle School Division Director operates primarily from a position of relational power and secondarily from positional power.
Through regular communication (e.g. one-on-one, small group and divisional meetings, and written communication) and classroom observation, the Middle School Division Director leads and supports teachers with interdisciplinary collaboration, professional growth, program development, and communication with students and parents. As a member of the administrative team the Middle School Division Director facilitates teacher collaboration within and across divisions.
The Middle School Division Director fosters a shared understanding of the school’s mission and values. The Middle School Division Director dialogues with families about program in a variety of ways. Communication may take the form of curriculum nights, PA presentations (either organizing or delivering), Coffee and Conversations, meetings, emails, and one-on-one conversations.
In relation to the leadership of faculty, the Middle School Division Director:
- Organizes and facilitates divisional and interdivisional meetings
- Participates on the Education Committee and other School committees
- Engages the faculty in collaborative decision making while still maintaining responsibility and credible decision making power when needed
- Provides significant support to new Group and Specials teachers
- Recruits faculty with support of search committees
- Hires, supervises, evaluates and terminates faculty with the support of the Principal
- Researches and communicates opportunities for professional development, including relevant articles, workshops, conferences, etc., as well as helping to coordinate faculty in-service opportunities with the Curriculum Administration Committee and Education Committee
- Supports faculty opportunities to present at conferences and other professional venues
As part of the Senior Administrative Team, the Middle School Division Director:
- Assists the Principal in communicating the School’s program to the internal and external communities
- Identifies issues and ways of addressing them at faculty meetings and through creatively drawing upon community resources and personnel
- Works with Business Office (manages Group and Divisional budgets)
- Works with Admissions
- Writes articles for school related publications
- Attends job fairs for staff recruitment
- Attends conferences and workshops
- Coordinates with the Director of the Lower School and Admissions Director to plan retention events for Lower School parents (IIIs, IVs and VIIs Coffee & Conversations)
- Works with other Schools to coordinate events and for networking purposes.
- Networks with colleges and universities in placing student teachers and in support of teacher recruitment efforts
- Writes student recommendations Especially able in managing and delegating, the Middle School Division Director handles the administrative functions of the Division.
The Middle School Division Director:
- Oversees the Reports process
- Supervises the Conference process
- Supervises Administrative Associate
- Coordinates with Receptionist for scheduling floaters and substitute teachers
- Schedules school assemblies and events
- Supervises Play scheduling, with the Rhythms Teacher, for both the Middle and Upper School
- Manages floater schedule and facilitates associate teacher mentoring meetings
In attending to the well being of each child and family, the Middle School Division Director:
- Coordinates the Student Support Team
- Develops logical consequences for problematic behavior and conflict, and coordinates school responses with families with a focus on learning and resolution
- Communications with families on a variety of topics and through multiple means
- In collaboration with the Upper School Director, manages School Psychologist and Learning Specialist
- Master’s degree in education or related field
- A minimum of of 3 years teaching experience. 5 years or more preferred
- Some administrative experience and experience as a manager
- Knowledge of progressive education required
- Experience in an independent school preferred
- A commitment to equity, inclusion and social justice
- Demonstrated success working as a leader in collaborative environments
- A solid understanding of the developmental and curricular needs of students of this age ● Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Proven presentation skills
- Solid organizational skills
