Position Description

At Charles Wright Academy, a coeducational independent school in Tacoma, WA, students discover their passions through a breadth of opportunities inside and outside the classroom.  At the recent board meeting CWA adopted its new mission statement: To inspire active, joyful learning while nurturing and challenging our students to develop the character, creativity, and skills to successfully navigate the future with confidence.

Charles Wright Academy is one of the premier schools in the Pacific Northwest. CWA opened its doors to 40 boys and a faculty of five in September 1957 and in 1970 became a co-ed school. Today CWA boasts 657 students (app. 50% male/female) with 199 students in lower school, 176 in middle school and 282 in the high school and a faculty of 88 talented, dedicated teachers. 40% of the students are students of color. Additionally, CWA welcomes students from countries such as China, Lithuania, Sweden, Taiwan, Korea, Japan and Malaysia.

CWA provides challenging, college preparatory academics that prepares students to thrive in college and in life.  Equally important is a wide array of experiential education, artistic, athletic and service opportunities that promote students’ social-emotional development and provide avenues by which they discover and pursue their passions. As a college preparatory school CWA expects every graduating senior to enroll at a college or university. CWA can proudly boast that graduates are accepted to some of the most selective schools, the nation’s top science and engineering programs and the most prestigious liberal arts colleges. More importantly, however, the school helps the students find the right fit for them.

The school sits on a beautiful wooded 107 acre campus with impressive facilities that fully support CWA’s programs and enhance the experience of all in the CWA community.

Tacoma, WA, is a mid-sized urban port city sitting on the southern banks of Puget Sound, approximately 40 miles south of Seattle. Tacoma is known for the Museum of Glass, which has works by renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly. The community of Tacoma is recognized as one of the most livable and walkable in America and was recently featured in Sunset Magazine as one of the “Game-Changing Places to Live.” Amazing opportunities to explore the outdoors makes this area a wonderful place to live.  You can kayak or walk the beaches of Puget Sound or hike Mt Rainier which is just 60 miles away. Another beautiful fact, housing costs in Tacoma are 61% less than in Seattle.

CWA is an accredited member in the Northwest Association of Independent Schools, NAIS, Index and the Master Transcript Consortium. This is truly an amazing opportunity to be the Head of a Preschool through 12th grade school in the Pacific Northwest.
