If you are an experienced independent school educator who finds joy in serving the unique academic and developmental needs of middle school students, believes in an education that combines active, hands-on doing with deep, reflective thinking, and is committed to furthering a lofty mission and a centuries-old motto of working toward enlightenment, the opportunity to lead Newark Academy’s outstanding Middle School is for you.
Educators Collaborative is pleased to be partnering with the Newark Academy in its senior administrative search for its next Middle School Principal to succeed Tom Ashburn, who will become the school’s next Head of School beginning July 1, 2025.
About the School
With a rich history, a vibrant present, and an exciting future, Newark Academy is one of the nation’s leading independent day schools. As it celebrates the 250th year since its founding, the Academy has never been stronger than it is now, boasting an unparalleled academic program, outstanding facilities, record applications for admission, and a robust financial condition. The Academy’s next Middle School Principal will continue to develop its innovative academic program, support outstanding teachers, and provide inspirational leadership to the Newark Academy Middle School community with grace, vision, intellect, and professionalism.
The Middle School Program
At Newark Academy’s Middle School, students are encouraged to dive into discovery and also have fun. Its supportive community embraces each child as they build skills, learn from mistakes, and grow. The 6-8th grade program is grounded in the values of the NA community and reflects the belief that learning is best measured by excitement, engagement and enthusiasm. Such evaluation is possible not through standardized tests but through NA teachers’ deep understanding of students and a commitment to helping students engage in honest self-assessment.
The Campus
Newark Academy is situated on a beautiful 68-acre campus in Livingston, New Jersey, about 15 minutes from the bustling and scenic town of Morristown and less than 30 miles from New York City. Unlike many other schools, the NA campus allows all students in grades 6-12 to reside in a single structure with an expansive array of outdoor facilities for athletic and recreational purposes, as well as ample green and wooded spaces. The Wilf Middle School (completed in 2017) serves the specific needs of middle school students in an intentionally designed space that is both set apart from the rest of the school while simultaneously connected to the Upper School.
Working with a dynamic, diverse, and high-functioning leadership team, the next Middle School Principal at Newark Academy will have the opportunity to build on a strong, centuries-old foundation in offering an exceptional education to a diverse community of students.
