About the School

Founded over 30 years ago (1972) by Nancy Corkum, Shrewsbury Montessori School, as its name denotes, has adopted the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori and has been providing excellent education in central Massachusetts for 200 boys and girls ages 3 to Grade 6.

The mission of Shrewsbury Montessori School is to provide an educationally prepared environment embracing the philosophy and methods of Dr. Maria Montessori. The School’s goal is to foster the development of the whole child.

Shrewsbury Montessori School encourages creativity and self-discipline, initiative and academic achievement, independence, self-confidence, and a sense of personal and communal responsibility. Shrewsbury Montessori School provides a supportive, non-competitive environment in which each child is accorded the respect and freedom necessary to realize his or her unique personality and potential.

The School is located on three campuses: the campus in Shrewsbury, Shrewsbury Montessori School, and a campus located in Auburn, The Montessori Children’s House of Auburn, and a campus in Worcester. Originally a proprietary school, SMS today is in its eleventh year as an independent, not-for-profit school, accredited by the Association of Independent Schools of New England (AISNE) and American Montessori Society (AMS). The Visiting Team for accreditation observed: “This is a school on the move – and, even more exciting, poised on the brink of expansion.”

The Board of Trustees for SMS seek a head of school whose responsibilities will begin on or about July 1, 2018.
