Sophia Academy is an independent, gender-specific, middle school (grades 5-8) for girls from low-income families in Providence, Rhode Island. Sophia Academy, RIFounded in 2001, the school offers students a rigorous academic experience through a social justice lens. The students reflect the racial and ethnic diversity of the City of Providence. Sophia Academy is fulfilling its mission by: Changing the lives of low-income girls through an empowering middle school education.

The student to teacher ratio is, on average, 15:1. Nearly 100 percent of the alumnae successfully complete high school in four years. Tuition is $15,000 per year (with family contributions averaging $400- $1,250 annually). The majority of the operating budget comes from individuals and private foundations.

Sophia is governed by a 26-member Board of Trustees and is accredited by the Association of Independent Schools of New England.
